So for those of you that didn’t know already despite my going’s on, I recently set up a collective called Nimble promoting green initiatives through the arts, mainly concentrating on bikes of course.
My goal for the past two years has been to set up a Social Centre which is bike friendly, educational and most of all, FREE and OPEN LATE in the city. Over the past year, I’ve been learning the necessary bike/business/arts skills which will help me to do this and last month (on my birthday) I finally set up the company. I have been researching across the UK the best spaces and places I can find and yet still I haven’t found exactly what I’m looking for, which is great because possibly we will be one of the first of our kind!
So now is the hard part: FUNDRAISING. At the moment, we are gathering money from screenings, bike jumbles, Bikeability work and grants and bursaries. The end goal is to be self sustainable from the cafe/shop/workspace earnings but before we can manage that we need to cover start-up costs so if you are feeling generous, know of anyone who would like to help fundraise or work yourself for an organisation which gives money to causes such as this then please get in touch!
Our aim is to support the growing cycling community in the city but not only that, to provide a space for people to hang out without feeling obliged to pay for something, a place where you can see some art/watch a movie/get your bike fixed/borrow some cool books/grab a coffee. A multi-purpose space like this can also be borrowed by artists and other grassroots groups to showcase their work and we would like to help those who have helped us in the past. So if you think it’s a good idea and would like to know more….don’t hesitate! Birmingham is waiting. x
